Cyprus has a significant international financial services sector, attracting businesses and high-net-worth individuals particularly from Russia, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East due to its EU membership, English common law heritage, and historically low tax rates. This international character means Cypriot banks offer sophisticated multi-currency services, and Limassol has developed as a regional financial center with numerous international company headquarters. Cypriot banking hours are Monday to Friday from 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM for counter services, though some branches offer afternoon appointments. Cyprus observes 15 public holidays — among Europe's highest — including both Greek Orthodox religious holidays and national commemorations: Independence Day (October 1), Ohi Day (October 28, same as Greece), and the Greek National Day (March 25). The Greek Orthodox Easter period results in bank closures on both Good Friday and Easter Monday. Cyprus's divided status means the northern Turkish Cypriot-controlled area operates entirely separate banking institutions not recognized by the Republic of Cyprus or EU. Cyprus's JCC Payment Systems processes the majority of card transactions on the island and operates the interbank payment infrastructure. The country participates in SEPA and TARGET2 as a eurozone member. For international businesses, Cyprus remains attractive despite the 2013 crisis, though the banking sector has significantly reduced its international deposit base following EU pressure to reduce money laundering risks and improve compliance standards.
