Are Banks Open Today in Vietnam?

Vietnam's  banking sector is regulated by the State  Bank of Vietnam. The country has experienced rapid banking sector growth and modernization in recent years.  Banks maintain standard business hours during weekdays and are closed on national holidays. Digital banking has grown significantly, with mobile banking becoming increasingly popular among Vietnamese consumers. Vietnam's banking sector includes four state-owned commercial banks — Vietcombank, VietinBank, BIDV, and Agribank — which dominate the market alongside a growing number of joint-stock commercial banks like Techcombank, VPBank, and MB Bank. The State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) regulates all financial institutions and has been actively driving banking sector reform and modernization as part of Vietnam's rapid economic development. Vietnamese bank branches typically operate Monday to Friday from 7:30 AM or 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM or 5:00 PM, with Saturday morning hours at many urban branches from 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM. In major cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, banking access is comprehensive, but rural and mountainous provinces may have very limited branch presence, with some communities relying on mobile banking agents and Vietnam Post banking services. Tết Nguyên Đán (Vietnamese Lunar New Year) is by far the most significant banking holiday, resulting in official closures of 5-7 days, though the effective slowdown begins 1-2 weeks before as businesses settle accounts and individuals withdraw cash for the holiday period. Banks often run out of new banknotes before Tết as gifting crisp new bills is a cultural tradition. Other important holidays include National Day (September 2), Reunification Day (April 30), and International Labor Day (May 1) which often combine to create a 4-day holiday break. Vietnam's digital banking transformation has been remarkable, with the government's financial inclusion push driving adoption of electronic payments particularly among younger urban populations. VietQR, a unified QR payment standard, allows instant transfers between all Vietnamese banks through a single scan. Mobile banking apps from Vietcombank, VPBank, and others process millions of transactions daily. For foreign investors and businesses, Vietnam maintains currency controls on the Vietnamese Dong (VND), making banking day awareness critical for managing cross-border fund flows through the SBV-regulated foreign exchange system.
